Finding your Niche

Basty’s Notebook

Hi, everyone! My name is Basty, and I’m a data scientist and educator from Metro Manila. If there’s something I value so much, that is education. Education has allowed me to not only dive into the amazing world of code and data, but also to encourage and inspire others to do the same. Read more about me here.

Outside of work and school, I love playing video games like Valorant and League of Legends. I also love listening to Broadway musicals (HAMILTON, DEH, TICK TICK BOOM ALL THE WAY!). Lastly, I LOVE watching Friends, New Girl, HIMYM, and The Big Bang Theory.

Now, let’s take a look at my notebook!

January 2023 Notebook entry

It’s the year 2023, and what better way to start off the year with a blog post that will help you get on track with your data journey! For the month of January, our theme focuses on finding your niche and excelling in it, and in this day and age, data drives nearly every aspect of our economy. Whether you’re a scientist, a businessperson, or a programmer, having the right data-related skills is essential to future success. But, with so many data niches out there, it can be difficult to choose which one suits your needs best. In this blog post, we’ll go over some key factors to consider when choosing the right data niche for your career. Let’s get started!

What is a niche?

Before we even get started, let’s first define what a niche is. In simple terms, a niche is an interest that allows someone to excel in a particular field. It’s where a person can function comfortably in their own conditions and offer a set of skills that is often unique from others.

Like I said, there are a lot of niches in data and so before you go make a decision, it’s crucial to make sure that you are choosing a niche where you feel you can realistically create impact. For example, if you are an experienced statistician, you may want to lean your niche towards network analysis or time series analysis.

What to consider when finding your niche?

Whichever niche you decide to pursue in your career, it's important to have a clear understanding and consideration of some factors to make sure you excel in your chosen niche.

Here are some factors that you should consider when choosing the right data niche:

  1. Identify your passions and interests

I believe that the most important factor to consider when choosing a niche, whether it may be about data or not, is to find out what you’re passionate about. Ask yourself, what are the things that interest and excite you the most? Which industry do you like to work in–finance, healthcare, or food? Perhaps machine learning is something that you’re curious about, or working with text data seems fulfilling for you.

It’s very important to keep your interests in mind when considering which data niche to pursue because while different fields may provide job opportunities, it should also challenge and motivate you in ways that make it enjoyable. And by identifying your passions and interests, you can have more fulfilling experiences while boosting your career.

  2. Consider your skills and experience

Another important factor that you should consider is your current skills and experience. If you have a strong background in a particular area, such as economics or marketing, you may want to consider focusing on a niche that aligns with that experience. On the other hand, if you are just starting out in the field, I suggest you consider a niche that allows you to build on your existing skills and knowledge.

  3. Look at existing job markets

Once you’ve identified your preferred data niche, you’ll need to research the current market trends and other players in the field. Look at job platforms such as LinkedIn and you will see that the demand for data professionals is constantly evolving. Look at what industries and types of data are in high demand, and consider focusing on a niche that aligns with those trends. And so, by keeping an eye on job market trends, you will see where opportunities lie, as well as what skills you’ll need to build to succeed in your niche.

  4. Seek out mentors

Another great way to choose the right data niche is to seek out the guidance of mentors and advisors. These individuals can offer valuable insights and advice based on their own experiences in the field that could help you decide on which niche to choose.

  5. Don’t be afraid to switch niches

Lastly, it’s crucial to remember that the data niche you choose will very likely evolve over time. So, if you find yourself no longer being passionate about your current niche, you must be prepared to adapt and reinvent yourself. Don’t be afraid to make a switch. With the right skills and experience, you can always pivot to a new niche and excel in it.

Excelling with your niche

Finding your niche can definitely be a challenge. There are a lot of things to consider before even thinking of a specific field to focus on, and this might cause you to be discouraged. However, by considering your passions, skills, and job market trends, and seeking out mentors, you can make an informed decision about the right data niche for your career.

Don't be afraid to take risks and try new things, and remember that your career path is not a straight line. With hard work and dedication, you can find success and fulfillment in any niche you choose.

Never stop learning!
