Creating Impact in Data Science as a Writer and a Scientist

Hi, everyone! My name is Basty, and I’m a data scientist and educator from Metro Manila. If there’s something I value so much, that is education. Education has allowed me to not only dive into the amazing world of code and data, but also to encourage and inspire others to do the same. Read more about me here.

Outside of work and school, I love playing video games like Valorant and League of Legends. I also love listening to Broadway musicals (HAMILTON, DEH, TICK TICK BOOM ALL THE WAY!). Lastly, I LOVE watching Friends, New Girl, HIMYM, and The Big Bang Theory.

December 2022 Notebook entry

April 2022 was the time that I decided to write on data science and publish blog posts together with Eskwelabs. Fast forward to today, from what was once just a decision has now transformed to a total of 13 blog posts written and published. This year was definitely a year of change and adventure for me. A lot of new things came into my life that gave essence to my career, but writing became the most constant throughout the year. And so, for my final blog post for 2022 let’s look back into my career as a writer and how it helped me become a better data scientist. Let’s get started!

Where it all started

So my journey began with exploring and reading data science articles on TowardsDataScience. I read different articles about their journey on becoming a data scientist, and even technical topics. I’ve always had a thing for creating impact, in fact that’s my entire slogan, “Create Impact”. I admired other thought leaders in the industry on how they inspired other people to start in data science and took after their path to become my own thought leader. So together with the inspiration I got from other people and my own journey of learning data science, I decided to use my knowledge and experience to hopefully inspire others to work in data. 

After reading countless articles on data science, I realized that most of the articles online are highly technical in nature. With the nature of data science being technical as it already is, it gave me flashbacks on how difficult it was also for me to break into this industry, given that I was only self-taught. That’s when I realized that there are a lot of people out there that didn’t have the luxury of affording an education to get into data. So I asked myself, “is there a way for me to reach and inspire people with data science that is not too overhwhelming?”. That’s where I decided to become a data science writer who writes about all data-related content that is accessible, simple to understand, yet technical in nature. 

Through my writings, I wanted to create impact by encouraging beginners, transitioners, and enthusiasts to take on the world of data science and overcome the hurdles they may come across. I also wanted to challenge the minds of experienced data scientists to be open to writing and creating accessible content. 

The response

The response to my articles has been overwhelming. With my first blog post alone, I was already known as the man with the memes. I filled my blogs with memes hoping that it would create a light and fun take on the topics, and the feedback that I have received has been incredibly motivating. 

Despite being known as the man with the memes, of course I also had to evolve in terms of how I write my blog posts. From someone who included memes all the time has now turned into someone who embodies the values of Eskwelabs through his writing. Yay for growth! 

Impact

As I continue to write more data science content in the future, I hope that my blog posts have helped a lot of people understand and appreciate data science more deeply. I also hope that I’ve inspired others to start their journey of becoming a writer who also inspires others to create change with data. 

With the year coming to a close, I am so glad that I was able to use my knowledge and experience to help others. My journey in data science as both data scientist and writer is an ever-evolving one. The journey of data science is an ever-evolving one. As technology advances, so does our understanding of the power of data. We have only scratched the surface of what is possible with data science and I am excited to see what this field will bring us in the future. I look forward to continuing to write articles that will help people understand and appreciate the incredible power of data science. See you next year and always remember…
